Nature-Based Environmental Citizenship Education for Sustainability: A Case Study from Türkiye

As global environmental challenges intensify, there is an increasing need to equip younger generations with the knowledge, values, and sense of responsibility necessary for a sustainable future. This study explores how environmental citizenship education (ECE), implemented through a nature-based learning program within a Nature and Science School (NSS) in Türkiye, was experienced and interpreted by primary school pupils in relation to their development of understanding of sustainability and environmental citizenship. NSSs, integrated into the formal education system by the Turkish Ministry of National Education, offer inquiry-driven and experiential learning in natural settings. The study took place in Talat Göktepe Grove, a biodiverse site including forest and marine ecosystems, where a four-month ECE program was conducted. A holistic single-case study design was employed, drawing on pupil diaries and semi-structured interviews. A total of 88 pupils engaged in structured outdoor activities addressing biodiversity, sustainability, and the climate crisis. Determining the Digital Literacy Levels and Opinions of Classroom Teachers Attending eTwinning Activities

The study aims to determine the digital literacy levels and opinions of classroom teachers who participated in eTwinning activities in Mersin province in the 2022-2023 academic year according to various variables. A mixed method was used in the study. The "Digital Literacy Scale" developed by Bayrakçı (2020) was used to collect quantitative data. The digital literacy scale consists of 6 sub-dimensions and 29 items: ethics and responsibility, general knowledge and functional skills, daily use, professional production, privacy and security, and social dimension. The research study group of the research consisted of 362 volunteer classroom teachers who participated in eTwinning activities working in Mersin province. The study’s qualitative data of the study were collected through semi-structured interviews with 7 classroom teachers using the interview form prepared by the researchers and the data were analyzed by content analysis. Within the scope of the research, the digital literacy levels of classroom teachers who participated in eTwinning activities were found to be high. Sınıf Öğretmenleri Web 2.0 Araçları Kullanımında Ne Kadar Yetkin? Fen Bilimleri Dersi Örneği

Bu araştırma sınıf öğretmenlerinin fen bilimleri dersinde Web 2.0 araçları kullanımında ne kadar yetkin olduğunu belirlemek amacıyla yapılmıştır. Çalışma karma araştırma yöntemlerinden yakınsayan paralel desene göre yürütülmüştür. Çalışmanın nicel boyutunda Mersin ilinde görev yapan 113 sınıf öğretmenine “Web 2.0 Araçları Kullanım Yetkinliği Ölçeği” uygulanmıştır. Araştırmanın nitel boyutunda sekiz katılımcı ile yarı yapılandırılmış görüşmeler gerçekleştirilmiştir. Ayrıca sekiz sınıf öğretmeninin yaptığı sınıf içi uygulamalar (katılımcı ürünleri) doküman inceleme kapsamında incelenmiştir. Nicel veriler SPSS 23 istatistik programı ile nitel veriler de içerik analizi ile analiz edilmiştir. “Web 2.0 Araçları Kulanım Yetkinliği Ölçeği”nden elde edilen sonuçlar bazı değişkenler (cinsiyet, eğitim durumu, mesleki kıdem, okul türü, internet kullanım sıklığı, hizmetiçi eğitim vb.) açısından incelenmiştir. Katılımcıların genel olarak Web 2.0 kullanımlarının yüksek düzeyde olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Cinsiyet, mesleki kıdem ve okul türü gibi değişkenlerin Web 2.0 araçlarına yetkin olmada anlamlı düzeyde bir farklılık oluşturmadığı sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Sınıf Öğretmeni Adaylarının Epistemik Merak Düzeyleri ile Akademik Motivasyonları Arasındaki İlişkinin İncelenmesi.

This study focuses on the concepts of epistemic curiosity, the desire to access the information needed for individuals to achieve learning, and academic motivation, expressed as the aspiration to reach academic goals in individuals' educational lives. The study utilized the correlational comparison model, which is a type of quantitative research method. In the 2020-2021 academic year, 158 students studying in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th years of the Department of Primary Education at Mersin University Faculty of Education participated in the study. The epistemic curiosity levels of the primary school teacher candidates were determined by the “Epistemic Curiosity Scale” developed by Litman and Spielberger (2003) and adapted into Turkish by Yazıcı (2020), and their academic motivation levels were determined by the “Academic Motivation Scale” developed by Bozanoğlu (2004). Independent t-test, Mann Whitney u-test, Kruskal Wallis h-test and simple linear regression analysis were used to analyze the data. Teknoloji Tabanlı Uygulamaların Sınıf Öğretmeni Adaylarının Bilim ve Bilim İnsanı Algısına Etkisi

Bu araştırmada teknoloji tabanlı uygulamalarla desteklenen fen öğretiminin, sınıf öğretmeni adaylarının bilim ve bilim insanı algısı üzerindeki etkisi incelenmektir. Araştırma, 2019-2020 eğitim öğretim yılı güz döneminde Mersin Üniversitesi Eğitim Fakültesi Sınıf Öğretmenliği Ana Bilim Dalı lisans programında yer alan “Fen ve Teknoloji Laboratuvar I” dersine kayıtlı 28 öğrenci ile yürütülmüştür. Araştırmada yarı deneysel desenlerden kontrol grupsuz ön test –son test modeli kullanılmıştır. Uygulama sürecinde bilim, bilimin doğası ve bilim insanları ile ilgili konular Web 2.0 araçlarıyla hazırlanan materyallerden yararlanarak işlenmiştir. Araştırmada veri toplama aracı olarak Chambers (1953) tarafından geliştirilen “Bir Bilim İnsanı Çiz Testi” (BBİÇT), araştırmacılar tarafından geliştirilen açık uçlu altı sorudan oluşan görüşme formu kullanılmıştır. An Investigation of the Relationship Between Engineering Knowledge Levels and STEM Attitudes of Primary School Students Attending Science and Art Centers

Bu araştırma, ilkokul öğrencilerinin STEM’e yönelik tutumları ile mühendislik bilgileri arasındaki ilişkiyi ve BİLSEM çerçevesinde STEM eğitiminin incelikli dinamiklerini incelemiştir. Çalışmada, Mersin’de BİLSEM’e devam eden ilkokul 4. sınıf öğrencilerinin STEM tutumları ile mühendislik bilgi düzeyleri arasındaki ilişkinin farklı alt boyutlar üzerinden incelenmesi amacıyla ilişkisel tarama yaklaşımı kullanılmıştır. Araştırmada kullanılan ölçme araçları aracılığıyla cinsiyetin mühendislik bilgi düzeylerini ve STEM tutumlarını önemli ölçüde etkilemediği belirlenmiştir. Ancak STEM’in Kişisel ve Sosyal Uygulamalar ve Mühendisliği Öğrenme ve STEM ile İlişkilendirme boyutları incelendiğinde Mersin, Tarsus, Silifke ve Anamur ilçelerindeki katılımcılara göre Mersin grubundaki katılımcıların Silifke ve Anamur’daki öğrencilere göre daha yüksek sıra ortalamalarına sahip oldukları görülmüştür. Exploring pre-service teachers’ experiences of engaging in sustainable environment: a Turkey-Italy eTwinning Project

The research initially delves into the outcomes of an international eTwinning project focused on heightening awareness among future primary school teachers about the causes and consequences of climate change within the framework of sustainable environmental education1 . Employing qualitative research methodologies, the investigation took the form of a case study. The participant group consisted of 13 pre-service teachers studying at Mersin and Balıkesir Universities in Turkey as well as the University of Palermo in Italy in the academic year 2021- 2022. Researchers utilized a semi-structured interview format crafted specifically for the study. The objectives encompassed enhancing the understanding of pre-service teachers regarding sustainable environmental education, fostering their familiarity with eTwinning to enable crosscultural interaction with other European pre-service teachers. Furthermore, emphasis was placed on elevating pre-service teachers' awareness about foreign language utilization and the integration of information and communication technology (ICT)2 . Examination Of The Relationship Between Primary School Teachers' Nature Relatedness And Environmental Consciousness

Bu araştırma 2020-2021 öğretim yılı Mersin merkez ilçelerinde (Akdeniz, Mezitli, Toroslar, Yenişehir) görev yapan sınıf öğretmenlerinin doğayla ilişki ve çevre bilinç düzeyleri arasındaki ilişkinin incelenmesi amacıyla yapılmıştır. Araştırmada nicel araştırma yöntemlerinden tarama modeli kullanılmıştır. Veri toplama aracı olarak; Nisbet ve arkadaşları tarafından 2009 yılında geliştirilip Çakır ve diğerleri tarafından (2015) Türkçeye uyarlaması gerçekleştirilen Doğayla İlişki Ölçeği ve Şaşmaz Ören ve diğerleri (2010) tarafından geliştirilen Çevre Bilincine Sahip Öğretmen Nitelikleri Ölçeği kullanılmıştır. Araştırmanın örneklemini uygun örnekleme yöntemi kullanılarak seçilen Mersin ili merkez ilçelerindeki MEB e bağlı devlet okullarında görev yapan 345 sınıf öğretmeni oluşturmuştur. Araştırma sonucunda Mersin ilinde MEB’e bağlı sınıf öğretmenlerinin doğayla ilişki düzeyleri ve çevre bilinci düzeylerinin ortalamanın üzerinde olduğu sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. EXPERIENCES OF QUALIFIED TEACHERS OF THE FUTURE IN THE SCOPE OF AN INTERNATIONAL ETWINNING PROJECT

The aim of robust social learning networks such as eTwinning, which is a part of Erasmus internationality programs, is to foster and promote the creation and development of awareness for respect, tolerance and understanding by ensuring the integration of young people from different countries and cultures through dialogue. Phenomenological research design, one of the qualitative research methods, was used in this research in which the experiences of teacher candidates regarding the eTwinning project were analyzed. The focus of the transnational collaboration was that student teachers from different cultures use eTwinning’s secure and safe digital platform, Twinspace, to contribute to their cultural, personal and professional development and competences through eTwinning activities. The aim of this study is to investigate the interdisciplinary studies in the fields of life studies, social studies and science education carried out in Turkey between the years 2000-2020. A total of 38 scientific studies from postgraduate theses (16 pieces) and articles (22 pieces) scanned in TR Index Ulakbim between 2000-2020, which are open to access on the official website of the National Thesis Center of the Council of Higher Education, were included in this review. All the studies reviewed; it was classified in terms of publication year, publication type, research method, sample group, data collection tools, keywords, and distribution of interdisciplinary ties. In the study, descriptive research method was used within the scope of qualitative research. In the analysis of the data, coding was done by using content analysis and the frequency values were presented. According to the results of this research, it is seen that the number of studies covering the fields of social studies and science is the highest. It has been understood that the studies covering the fields of life sciences and science are the least. Digital stories are a form of expression that emerges by combining the art of storytelling with multimedia tools such as sound, picture, and video. In this research, examining the experiences of pre-service teachers in creating digital stories in accordance with the science curriculum and the effects of this process on the pre-service teachers’ self-confidence in technological pedagogical content knowledge was aimed. This research, using a mixed model approach, was conducted with 24 fourth-grade pre-service teachers. In the study, the “Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge Confidence Scale” (TPACK) was applied as a pre-test and posttest. The quantitative findings of the study revealed that the experiences of pre-service teachers in creating a scientific digital story increased statistically significantly in the TK dimension of the TPACK scale and in the TPACK total self-confidence scores. The qualitative findings of the research showed that it had a positive effect on TCK, TPK, and TPCK dimensions, as well as on the TK and total score of TPACK. Distance education in the Covid-19 pandemic period: opinions of primary preservice teachers about teaching practice course

The Covid-19 pandemic, which has come to the fore all over the world, has had serious effects in the education process as in every field. Countries have urgently tried to make the necessary arrangements regarding their education systems. Similarly, in Turkey, the Ministry of National Education tried to transfer the courses in formal education to the distance education system in all schools and Higher Education Institutions. However, until this time, only theoretical courses and courses regarding the technology-based practices were included in distance education. In this sense, serious difficulties have experienced especially in practical courses such as laboratories and internships. This study aims to analyse the effects of science teaching practices supported by Web 2.0 tools on prospective elementary school teachers’ perceptions of self-efficacy beliefs in using Web 2.0 tools. The study was conducted in pre test-post test quasi-experimental design with no control group, and it was supported with qualitative data. The research was conducted with the participation of 40 prospective teachers registered in Elementary School Teaching Department of a state university in 2017-2018 academic year. The study was conducted throughout a semester (for 14 weeks) within the scope of the course Science and Technology Teaching II. Investigation of the Effects of Out-of-School Learning Environments on the Attitudes and Opinions of Prospective Classroom Teachers about Renewable Energy Sources

The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of energy resources activities on attitudes and views of prospective classroom teachers about renewable energy resources within the context of out-of school learning environments. In the study, quasi-experimental design without pre-test post-test control group was used. The research was conducted in the spring term of 2017-2018 academic year with an in-depth study plan for a total of 14 weeks with 12 prospective classroom teachers within the scope of Community Service Practices course. Out-of-school learning activities are held in Solar Park House and Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant Information Center which is Turkey's first nuclear power plant, located in Mersin. In the research, Attitude Scale for Renewable Energy Resources developed by Güneş, Alat and Gözüm (2013) was used. Also, the interview form, which consists of open-ended questions developed by the researcher and the diaries kept by the prospective teachers within the scope of the course were examined by qualitative analysis method. As a result of the research, it was found that there was a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test scores of the prospective classroom teachers regarding the renewable energy resources in favor of the post-test scores.
Examining The Attitudes Of Primary School Students Towards Science and Social Studies Courses

The study aims to identify the fourth graders’ attitudes towards the courses of science and social studies and the correlations between them. The study was conducted with the participation of 285 fourth graders attending the primary schools in Mersin and Balıkesir in 2017-2018 academic year. The “Attitudes towards Science Scale” developed by Geban, Ertepınar, Yılmaz, Altın and Şahbaz (1994) and the “Attitudes towards Social Studies Course Scale” developed by Kalın and Topkaya (2017) were used in this study as the tools of data collection. The Cronbach’s Alpha internal consistency coefficient was found to be .84 for the attitudes towards social studies course. The attitudes towards science scale is a five-pointed Likert type scale of 15 items. The reliability for the scale was found as 0.88. At the end of the study, the fourth graders’ attitudes towards science course and social studies course were analysed according to gender and the city where they lived, and consequently, recommendations were made to their teachers. It is thought that the use of education thematic films in teacher education and the teacher-student relations in films will be an example for teacher candidates, therefore it can affect the attitudes towards the profession and the motivation of teaching. In this context; the aim of the research is to examine the effect of education thematic films on classroom teacher candidates’ motivation to teach and attitudes towards teaching profession. An explanatory design model has been used in the research that one of the mixed method designs. Explanatory design; requires qualitative data for the purpose of supporting, explaining and interpreting quantitative data (Patton, 2002). Investigation of Preservice Elementary Teachers' Opinions on Science Fiction Films

In this research, opinions of preservice elementary teachers on science fiction films are investigated in terms of gender, academic success and department. The survey research method was used in this study. In this descriptive study, a relational screening model was used from survey method to determine the current situation. The relational screening model is a type of research model that aims to determine whether there is a relationship between two or more variables and to determine the degree of the relationship. Likert type attitude scale developed by Çemrek et al (2005) was used for gathering data in this research. The data were gathered from 142 students at the department of elementary science teacher and classroom teacher education at Hacettepe University during the 2014-2015 academic year. The collected data has been analyzed and interpreted with the help of SPSS statistical programme and recommendations were given in the light of results gathered at the end of this analysis.
The Effect of Portfolio Assessment on Exam Anxiety and Level of Retention of Learning in Science Education

Araştırma, Ankara İli Çankaya İlçesi’nde bir ilköğretim okuluna kayıtlı toplam 66 sekizinci sınıf öğrencisi üzerinde gerçekleştirilmiştir. Bu öğrencilerden 35’i deney grubu, 31’i ise kontrol grubunu oluşturmuştur. Deney grubunda portfolyo (bireysel gelişim dosyası) değerlendirme yöntemi, kontrol grubunda ise geleneksel kâğıt-kalem testleri değerlendirme yöntemi kullanılmıştır. Veri toplamak amacıyla araştırmacı tarafından geliştirilen “Genetik” ünitesiyle ilgili başarı testi ile Spielberger tarafından geliştirilen ve Albayrak ve Öner tarafından Türkçeye adapte edilen “Sınav Kaygı Envanteri” kullanılmıştır. The Effect of Elementary Students’ Attitude Towards Science on Their Levels of Test Anxiety

Bu çalışmanın amacı, ilköğretim ikinci kademe öğrencilerinin fen bilgisi dersine karşı tutumlarının sınav kaygı düzeylerine etkisini belirlemektir. Araştırmada betimsel yöntem kullanılmıştır. Araştırmanın deneklerini Ankara Balâ Ergin İlköğretim Okulu, Ankara Balâ Köseli İlköğretim Okulu ve Bolu Dörtdivan Merkez Şehit Orhan Yalçın İlköğretim Okulu’nda bulunan toplam 145 ikinci kademe öğrencisi oluşturmaktadır. Öğrencilere sınav kaygı envanteri ve fene karşı tutum ölçeği uygulanmıştır. Sınav kaygı puanları ile tutum puanları arasındaki ilişkiye, kaygı-cinsiyet ve tutum-cinsiyet ilişkilerine bakılmıştır. Sınav kaygı puanları ile tutum puanları arasında anlamlı bir ilişki bulunmuştur. Kaygı-cinsiyet ve tutum-cinsiyet ilişkilerine bakılmış ve aralarında anlamlı bir fark bulunamamıştır. The objective of this study is to find out the effect of second-grade elementary students’ (6th-, 7th- and 8th-year students) attitude towards science course on their levels of test anxiety.
