Metal(loid) accumulation and ecotoxicological assessment in cartilaginous fishes from the Northeastern Mediterranean

Çiftçi, Nuray | AYAS, Deniz

The present study was conducted with the objective of ascertaining the levels of selected metal(loid)s in the muscle, liver, spleen, kidney, stomach, intestinal, and gonad tissues of seven distinct cartilaginous species sampled from Northern Cyprus. This initiative was undertaken to address the dearth of metal bioaccumulation data for cartilaginous species and to elucidate the impact of metal pollution on these species, which are distinguished by their limited reproductive capacity. The samples were obtained from discarded species captured during commercial fishing activities. The metal concentrations in these tissues were subsequently determined using Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrophotometry (ICP-MS). The results indicated that the kidney tissue of Squalus blainville exhibited th...

First record of the big nose shark, Carcharhinus altimus (Springer, 1950) from Mersin Bay

Ayas, Deniz | Çiftçi, Nuray | Yalçın, Esin

The total length of this shark specimen, which caught from a depth of 25 m, is 65.2 cm, and its weight is 2.2 kg. In this study, juvenile C. altimus species are more likely to be born in the Levant basin than the immigration. Their parents are highly likely to be found in the deep waters of the northeastern Mediterranean. This finding may indicate that this circumglobal species may also spread in the Northeast Mediterranean. Thus, continuous studies are needed in this region for further investigation and monitoring of these species. This research will make a significant contribution to many researchers working in this field in the future.

Potential Usage of Pufferfish Dentin as a Metal Accumulation Indicator

Çiftçi, Nuray | Ayas, Deniz

The pufferfish are non-indigenous species in the Mediterranean Sea that do not have predators in the food chain. Therefore, the determination of heavy metal accumulation in pufferfish species can be considered as natural chelation for the aquatic environment. The present study, the potential usage of dentin tissue as an indicator of heavy metal bioaccumulation was examined in pufferfish species. The accumulation of Co, Cu, Zn, Fe, Mo, Ni, Se, Al, Cd, Pb, As, Cr in dentin, liver, kidney and muscle tissues of four pufferfish species (Lagocephalus sceleratus, Lagocephalus spadiceus, Lagocephalus suezensis, and Torquigener flavimaculosus) were captured in the Göksu River and Yeşjlovacık coasts of Turkey by a commercial trawler. The different bioaccumulation levels were found in each species...
