Cranial Morphometrics of a Stranded Common Bottlenose Dolphin Tursiops truncatus (Montagu, 1821) in Mersin Bay (Northeastern Mediterranean, Turkey)

AYAS, Deniz | Çiftçi, Nuray

On 10 November 2017, a young male common bottlenose dolphin Tursiops truncatus (Montagu, 1821), 185 cm in total length (TL), was found dead on the Mersin Marina (36°46'065"N, 34°34'212"E) in Northeastern Mediterranean coast of Turkey. Measurements of the sample performed and documented. The specimen buried to obtain the skeleton of the individual. At the end of this process, the sample was deposited in the Museum of the Systematic, Faculty of Fisheries, Mersin University, (Catalogue no: MEUMC-17- 11-001). The morphometric measurements can contribute to ongoing fisheries biology and taxonomic studies of T. truncatus from Mediterranean Sea waters. During routine fishing activities, common bottlenose dolphins can be caught in fishing nets and drowned. This issue leads to an extra pop...

First record of the big nose shark, Carcharhinus altimus (Springer, 1950) from Mersin Bay

Ayas, Deniz | Çiftçi, Nuray | Yalçın, Esin

The total length of this shark specimen, which caught from a depth of 25 m, is 65.2 cm, and its weight is 2.2 kg. In this study, juvenile C. altimus species are more likely to be born in the Levant basin than the immigration. Their parents are highly likely to be found in the deep waters of the northeastern Mediterranean. This finding may indicate that this circumglobal species may also spread in the Northeast Mediterranean. Thus, continuous studies are needed in this region for further investigation and monitoring of these species. This research will make a significant contribution to many researchers working in this field in the future.

The Comparison of Heavy Metal Level in Surface Water, Sediment and Biota Sampled from the Polluted and Unpolluted Sites in the Northeastern Mediterranean Sea

Çiftçi, Nuray | AYAS, Deniz

The determination of heavy metal level (aluminium, iron, zinc, arsenic strontium) in surface water, sediment, and biota in Iskenderun Bay, polluted site, and Mersin Bay, unpolluted site, in 2018–2019 seasonally were aimed. The muscle and liver (viscera for shrimp) tissue of three fish (Saurida lessepsianus, Nemipterus randalli, Mullus barbatus) and an invertebrate (Penaus semisulcatus) species, which have different habitats and diet, were used to detection of biota metal level. Sediment samples were analyzed in four different particle sizes which were < 63, 63 ≤ − < 125, 125 ≤ − < 250, 250 ≤ − < 500 μm mesh size. The metal levels in surface water, sediment, and biota samples were analysed with Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometer (ICP-MS). Statistical analysis of the data was...

First Report on the Elemental Composition of the Largest Bony Fishes in the World, the Ocean Sunfish (Mola mola) from the Mediterranean Sea.

Çiftçi, Nuray | Ayas, Deniz

In this study, element levels (Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Al, V, As, Ba, Sr, K, Pb) in the liver, gill, muscle, and stomach tissues of Ocean Sunfish (Mola mola) caught from Mersin Bay in 2018 were determined, and the first report on the elemental composition of M. mola from the Mediterranean sea presented. Spectrophotometric methods were used in the determination of tissue element levels. Metal analysis of the tissues was performed on the ICP-MS device. The reference material IAEA436 was used to follow the quality of the analytical process. Metal accumulation in M. mola tissues was determined as K> Fe> Zn>Sr> Cu> As> Al> V>Mn> Ni> Ba> Cr>Pb> Co. A statistical difference was found between tissues in terms of metal levels. It was determined that Fe and Cu were higher in the liver, Mn...
