Analysing occupational injuries onboard in Türkiye: human factors and under-reporting issues

Türkistanlı, Taha Talip | Pehlivan, Davut

Background: Maritime transportation remains one of the most hazardous industries globally, with work-related incidents posing significant risks. Material and Method: This research investigates onboard occupational injuries in the Turkish maritime sector, focusing on cases between 2013 and 2024. The study analyzes onboard injuries using the Human Factors Analysis and Classification System and Multiple Correspondence Analysis. Results: The study reveals that human error, inadequate supervision and insufficient organisational processes are primary contributors, particularly in dry bulk vessel operations. A lack of adequate rescue operations is noted, leading to high fatality rates. Furthermore, the analysis identifies a significant issue of under-reporting, especially in less severe eve...

A hybrid MCDM approach for optimizing fuel consumption and mitigating air pollution in shipping: A case study using DEMATEL and ANP

Fuel consumption represents a pivotal factor in determining operational costs within maritime transportation, with direct implications for energy efficiency, environmental sustainability, and air pollution. This study aims to identify and evaluate the key determinants influencing fuel consumption, with the objective of optimizing these factors to enhance overall energy efficiency. A Multi-Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) methodology was employed to systematically rank and prioritize the most significant criteria impacting fuel efficiency. The findings of the study indicate that compliance with sea conditions, optimal ship speed and the expertise of shipmasters (C3.2) are the most influential factors, followed by voyage planning that accounts for sea and weather conditions (C3.7). Thes...

Role of antioxidant defense system and biochemical adaptation on stress tolerance of high mountain and steppe plants

Keleş, Yüksel

Eleven species were collected from Northwest Anatolian mountains (1500–2000 m) and 18 species were collected from the Central Anatolian steppes (850–1000 m) in June 1998 and 1999. In all the species investigated, the water and dry matter percentages and solute contents were measured. The chlorophyll, b-carotene, ascorbate and a-tocopherol contents and catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD) andglutathione reductase (GR)enzymeactivities oftheplants werealsodetermined.Thesteppeplantshadlowerwatercontentcomparedwith alpine plants. The chlorophyll contents of the plants investigated did not change with altitude. However, the carotenoid/chlorophyll ratio of alpine plants was found to be significantly higher. The antioxidant/chlorophyll ratio of the trees and shrubs was higher than that of he...
