Examination of individuals' depression, anxiety, and stress levels during the COVID-19 pandemic in Turkey

Erdoğan, Semra | Can, Ahu Aksoy | Yılmaz, Duygu Vefikuluçay

Purpose: This research was conducted to determine the depression, anxiety, and stress levels of individuals during the COVID-19 epidemic. In addition, the compatibility of the Depression-Anxiety-Stress Scale (DASS-21) scale results with the participants' feeling depressed, anxious, and stressed were examined. Design and methods: The sample of the study consisted of 870 individuals over the age of 18 between May–August 2021. The data of the study were collected online, using the personal information form and DASS-21. Results: In our study, it was observed that 22.3 % of the participants were severely depressed, 19.0 % were highly anxious and 14.3 % were highly stressed. In addition, a relationship was determined between many sociodemographic variables and depression, anxiety, and stress lev...

Deep Learning-Based Prediction Models for the Detection of Vitamin D Deficiency and 25-Hydroxyvitamin D Levels Using Complete Blood Count Tests

Acı, Çiğdem | Acı, Mehmet

Vitamin D (VitD) is an essential nutrient that is critical for the well-being of both adults and children, and its deficiency is recognized as a precursor to several diseases. In previous studies, researchers have approached the problem of detecting vitamin D deficiency (VDD) as a single ”sufficient/deficient” classification problem using machine learning or statistics-based methods. The main objective of this paper is to predict a patient’s VitD status (i.e., sufficiency, insufficiency, or deficiency), severity of VDD (i.e., mild, moderate, or severe), and 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) level in a separate deep learning (DL)-based models. An original dataset consisting of complete blood count (CBC) tests from 907 patients, including 25(OH)D concentrations, collected from a public health la...

Effects of electromagnetic radiation on neurogenesis and gene expression in amniocytes,

Erdal, Nurten | Ay, Özlem İzci | Yıldırım, Didem Derici | Durukan, Hüseyin | Erdal, Mehmet Emin

The aim of the study was to investigate the genetic effects of commonly used radiofrequency on the amniocytes of pregnant women by examining the changes in the expression of genes related to signal transduction and neurogenesis induced by electromagnetic fields of radiofrequencies of 1800 and 2100 MHz by real-time PCR. Upon exposure of the amniocytes to electromagnetic radiation of 2100 MHz at high field strength, the expression levels of genes with important functions in the Wnt signaling pathways as well as neurogenesis-related genes were increased. The findings suggest that radiofrequency at high field strengths can have genotoxic effects during pregnancy.

Determination of Sample Size Using Resource Equation Methods in Analysis of Variance Models in Animal Studies

Erdoğan, Semra

The Resource Equation Method is a method developed as an alternative to power analysis for the calculation of sample size in animal studies. With this approach, the sample size is calculated based on the error degrees of freedom (DF) in the variance analysis model. In this study, one and two-factor variance analysis models, which are commonly used in animal studies, are discussed. The minimum and maximum sample size required for these models were calculating and presented in tables. While a minimum of 12 and a maximum of 21 animals in total are sufficient for two independent groups (Design 1), and the total number of animals goes up as the number of groups increases. In one factor, repeated-measures experiment design (Design 2), it was observed that the number of animals to be included in ...

Role of antioxidant defense system and biochemical adaptation on stress tolerance of high mountain and steppe plants

Keleş, Yüksel

Eleven species were collected from Northwest Anatolian mountains (1500–2000 m) and 18 species were collected from the Central Anatolian steppes (850–1000 m) in June 1998 and 1999. In all the species investigated, the water and dry matter percentages and solute contents were measured. The chlorophyll, b-carotene, ascorbate and a-tocopherol contents and catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD) andglutathione reductase (GR)enzymeactivities oftheplants werealsodetermined.Thesteppeplantshadlowerwatercontentcomparedwith alpine plants. The chlorophyll contents of the plants investigated did not change with altitude. However, the carotenoid/chlorophyll ratio of alpine plants was found to be significantly higher. The antioxidant/chlorophyll ratio of the trees and shrubs was higher than that of he...

Status of Weighted Agreement Statistics Between Two Raters in Ordinal Data Affected by Sample size and Number of Categories

Erdoğan, Semra | Sucu, Damla Hazal

The aim of this study is to introduce weighted inter-rater agreement statistics used in ordinal scales, compare weighted agreement statistics along with the Spearman correlation coefficient and revealtheir status of being affected by the sample size and number of categories. For this purpose, data for different sample sizes and number of categories were produced for the cases when there is no relationship or when there is low, medium, or high relationship between the two raters, and the aforementioned weighted agreement statistics were calculated. It can be said that Cohen’s kappa, Scott’s π, and Krippendorff’s alpha coefficients provide similar results with the correlation coefficients, and they get values very close to the correlation coefficient value in the B-P agreement statisti...
