Evaluation of Dentist Preferences Among Children Aged 3–10 Years

Sahin, Meryem | Gonulal, Oyku Peker

Aim To determine children’s expectations regarding their dentist preferences, considering age and sex differences, and evaluate the results in terms of their communication with dentists. Study Design A cross-sectional study conducted at the Mersin University Pediatric Dentistry Clinic. Methods This study included 250 paediatric patients aged 3–10 years who presented to the Mersin University Pediatric Dentistry Clinic. Patients without comprehension or speech problems who were willing to participate were selected. The questionnaire consisted of 10 questions, with age-appropriate, easy-to-understand visuals created using the artificial intelligence-assisted Midjourney program. Results Children aged 3–10 years preferred a dentist of the same sex who was young, wore a white coat, g...

Effects of Pediatric Medicaments on Tooth Decay and Dental Erosion

One of the most common diseases affecting children is dental caries. Acidic by-products from the fermentation of bacteria with carbohydrates cause a decre- ase in plaque pH. This causes tooth decay by causing dissolution, destruction, and cavitation in dental hard tissues.1,2 Dental caries cause pain, loss of function, de- terioration of phonation and aesthetics in children, as well as developmental de- lay, loss of self-confidence, and reduced academic achievement.3 Dental erosion is defined as the chemical, irreversible loss of dental hard tissue by acid and/or a chelator without bacterial involvement.4 Dental erosion can occur due to many factors such as environmental factors, dietary habits, drugs and lifestyle. Among these, the factors that most affect children are stated as drug use ...

Evaluation of Cariogenic and Erosive Potentials of Pediatric Liquid Medicines

Peker, Öykü

ABSTRACT Background: This study aims to evaluate the cariogenic and erosive effects of pediatric liquid medicines (PLM) on the enamel of primary teeth, which have been increasingly used in children with acute or chronic diseases. Methods: Five long-term and widely used pediatric drugs (Augmentin, Zimaks, Calpol, Vitabiol, and Ferro Sanol B) were selected for this study. In order to evaluate the erosive and cariogenic potentials of the drugs, the sucrose concentrations, pH values and calcium concentrations they dissolve from the enamel tissue were determined. The samples were subjected to acid incineration with MARS XPress (CEM Brand) Microwave oven. Calcium concentrations were then measured by Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectroscopy (ICP MS). For the statistical data of the study, i...

Root canal treatment in a spina bifida patient with developmental root-canal anomaly: Case Report

Hamamcı, Rümeysa

Neural tube defects are common congenital malformations that could be apparent at birth or manifested in later stages of life. Spina bifida is a type of neural tube defect that results from failure of neural tube closure during the first month in utero. Predisposition to dental caries, latex allergy, and craniosynostosis causing maxillary deficiency are some of the key problems in spina bifida. In this case, we would like to present the root canal treatment we performed in a patient with spina bifida who presented to our clinic with pain in the right lower molar tooth and developmental root shape anomaly in the mandibular first molar teeth.

Evaluation of surface roughness and color changes of restorative materials used with different polishing procedures in pediatric dentistry

Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the color stability and surface roughness properties of four different restorative materials used in pediatric dentistry clinics as a result of four different polishing procedures. A total of 128 samples, 32 of each restorative material, were prepared by placing them in polyethylene molds with a diameter of 6 mm and a height of 2 mm, in accordance with the instructions of the manufacturers, to be polished with four different polishing procedures (n = 8). After finishing and polishing, the samples were kept in distilled water at 37 ◦C for 24 hours. Surface roughness and color stability measurements of the samples were then made. The Hysitron TI 950 TriboIndenter device in Mustafa Kemal University’s Technology Research & Development Center was used for ...
