Some morphometric and meristic characters of these individuals were measured. The average standard length (SL): 90.13 mm, total length (TL): 112.62 mm, the length of longest pectoral fin (LPF): 25.88 mm, the length of longest dorsal fin ray (LDF): 21.25 mm, SL/LPF: 3.88, SL/LDF: 4.24, A: III, 39-42; D: VI, 9; LL pore scales: 55-58. The ratio of eye diameter (ED) to standard length (SL) is 7.95. The presence of the non-indigenous Pempheris rhomboidea was reported for the first time from Northeastern Mediterranean Sea and second time fromTurkish marine waters.

Additional record of Trypauchen vagina (Bloch & Schneider, 1801) from Mersin Bay, Turkey.

Çiftçi, Nuray | Ayas, Deniz

Two mature individuals of Trypauchen vagina were caught by trawl fishing at 30 m depth in the Mersin coastal areas in September 2018. Meristic and morphometric measurements of the individuals were done and compared with its measurements reported in other studies. In previous studies; one record from Mersin Bay and in totally three records of T. vagina in the Northeastern Mediterranean Sea were reported. In this study, the second record of T. vagina was reported from Mersin Bay.

First Report on the Elemental Composition of the Bigeye Thresher Shark Alopias superciliosus Lowe, 1841 from the Mediterranean Sea

Çiftçi, Nuray | Cicik, Bedii | Ayas, Deniz

Cartilaginous fish species have ecological importance. Besides, the ecotoxicological studies on these species are pretty insufficient. In this study, Al, Cr, Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, As, Pb, Cd, and Sr levels were determined in muscle, liver, gill, kidney, spleen, stomach, and gonad tissues of Alopias superciliosus (Female, 240 cm TL) caught from Mersin Bay. Tissue metal analysis was determined by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS). A statistical difference was found among the tissues in terms of the metals. Fe was determined to be the highest level in all tissues (pGill>Spleen>Gonad>Kidney>Stomach>Muscle. Zn was detected at higher levels in the liver and stomach and As in other tissues after Fe. Al has the highest level after Zn and As and was mainly found in the gills. ...

Occurrence of the lesser spotted dogfish (Scyliorhinus caniculaLinnaeus 1758) in the international waters of Mersin Bay, Turkey

Ayas, Deniz | Çiftçi, Nuray

Eighty-five specimens of the lesser spotted dogfish, Scyliorhinus canicula Linnaeus, 1758, was caught by a bottom trawl in the international waters of the Mersin Bay in May 2018. Some of the caught individuals were preserved in 4% formalin and was deposited in the Museum of the Systematic, Faculty of Fisheries, Mersin University, (catalogue number: MEUFC-18-11-079). The depth of sampling area is between 274 and 641 m. A total of 13 trawling operations were carried out. The total number of caught individuals was 85 and on average 5 individuals were caught in each operation. The other cartilaginous fishes caught apart from S. canicula were Galeus melastomus (1 individual), Squalus acanthias (4 individuals), Etmopterus spinax (11 individuals) and S. canicula made up 84.16% of all cart...

The New Locality Record of Centrolophus niger (Gmelin, 1789), from Büyükeceli Coast (North-Eastern Mediterranean Sea)

Ayas, Deniz | Çiftçi, Nuray

A female rudderfish, Centrolophus niger (Gmelin, 1789) was caught by a trawler boat at a depth of 400 m on the shores of the Büyükeceli (Northeastern Mediterranean Sea). Its total length was 51.9 cm. This paper reports the fifth location along the Mediterranean and Aegean Sea coast of Turkey and the presence of the species in the Büyükeceli coast from the Mediterranean coast of Turkey.

Determination of Fish Diversity in The Rocky Habitat Around Mersin Boğsak Island (Northeast Mediterranean) by Visual Census Method

ATEŞ, Mert | ÇİFTÇİ, Nuray | AYAS, Deniz

The study was carried out in the rocky bottom habitat of Boğsak Island in Mersin Bay in November, March and July 2022-2023, using visual census method between 0-18 m depth and the survey was conducted along a transect. In the study, the structure of the fish community of the rocky bottom habitat of Boğsak Island was determined and the seasonal availability, abundance, feeding status and distribution of native and non-native fish species were determined. Shannon-Weiner Diversity Index (H') was used to determine species diversity and multidimensional scaling analysis was used to determine the relationship between the data. A total of 29 fish species, including 28 bony fish species belonging to 15 families and 1 cartilaginous Gymnura altavela (Linnaeus, 1758) were identified in the study a...

Ayas, Deniz | Çiftçi, Nuray | Tanış, Yekta

The study aimed to report a confirmed stranding record of an adult female Risso’s dolphin (Grampus griseus) from the northeastern Mediterranean Sea. This species is classified as "Least Concern" in the Mediterranean by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The individual, which was first seen alive from the Erdemli shores of Mersin Bay on 10 April 2023, was tried to push back into the water after being stranded ashore. After the individual died, the corpse was brought to Mersin University Marine Life Museum for external examination. It was determined that the individual weighed 360 kg and had a length of 330 cm. Many old and new scars were found on the individual's skin. It was understood that the newly formed deep cut marks on the head area were caused by the ...

The Comparison of Heavy Metal Level in Surface Water, Sediment and Biota Sampled from the Polluted and Unpolluted Sites in the Northeastern Mediterranean Sea

Çiftçi, Nuray | AYAS, Deniz

The determination of heavy metal level (aluminium, iron, zinc, arsenic strontium) in surface water, sediment, and biota in Iskenderun Bay, polluted site, and Mersin Bay, unpolluted site, in 2018–2019 seasonally were aimed. The muscle and liver (viscera for shrimp) tissue of three fish (Saurida lessepsianus, Nemipterus randalli, Mullus barbatus) and an invertebrate (Penaus semisulcatus) species, which have different habitats and diet, were used to detection of biota metal level. Sediment samples were analyzed in four different particle sizes which were < 63, 63 ≤ − < 125, 125 ≤ − < 250, 250 ≤ − < 500 μm mesh size. The metal levels in surface water, sediment, and biota samples were analysed with Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometer (ICP-MS). Statistical analysis of the data was...
