Issos-Epiphanenia, one of the significant ancient cities of Cilicia Pedias, was urbanized since the Hellenistic period and came under its rule the Byzantine domination (395-635) after the Roman Empire (BC 67). Epiphaneia met with Islamic religion and civilization in the first half quarter of the 7th centenary, in parallel with the Islamization process of Anatolia. Although it was captured by Byzantium again in 965, it was conquered by the Umayyads in the 8th century and then by the Abbasids from the half of the 8th century. The Abbasids used Epiphaneia and its surroundings as a base in the Byzantine expeditions into Anatolia, conquering the coastal cities of the Eastern Mediterranean and by establishing permanent settlements and garrisons.
