Bu çalismanin amaci Ingilizce'de zamir çözümlemesi mekanizmasinin Türkögrencilere açikça ögretilmesini incelemek ve bunun cümlelerdeki göndergeleri ögrencilerindogru çözümlemede olasi etkilerine bakmaktir. Bu sebeple, baglaçlarin rolü, eylemin üyeseçmedeki egilimi, örtük nedensellik, etkilesim fiilleri, kavram olarak nedensellik, tümcelerinislemlenmesi gibi adil çözümlemesiyle ilgili konular teorik konular üzerinde durulmustur.Çalisma, yari deneysel bir çalisma nedeniyle, Mersin Üniversitesinin 2005-2006 dönemindekayit olmus hazirlik ögrencilerinden (N=76) bagimsiz iki grup üzerinde adil çözümlemesimekanizmasinin etkilerini inceleyebilmek için arastirma deseni olusturulmustur.Giris bölümünde çalismanin önemi, amaci, arastirma sorulari, sinirliliklari vekavram tanimlari gibi temel bilgiler verilmistir.Birinci bölümde baglaçlarin kullanimi, anlamsal roller, eylemin üye seçmedekiegilimi, adil çözümlemesi mekanizmasi ve teorileri, örtük nedensellik, etkilesim eylemleri,nedensellik gibi adil çözümlemesine iliskin yazin taramasi yapilmistir.Ikinci bölümde arastirma desenleri yer almaktadir: yöntem, veri toplama araçlari,madde analizi, ma lzeme gelistirme ve ögretim süreçleri, katilimcilar, arastirma sorulariylailgili olan verinin istatistiksel analizleri.Üçüncü bölümde, arastirma sorulariyla ilgili olan bulgular ve tartismalar yeralmaktadir.Sonuç bölümünde arastirmanin önemli noktalari vurgulanmakta ve daha ileri birçalisma için öneriler yer almaktadir. Bu çalismanin sonucunda, Ingilizce ögrene n Türkögrencilerine Ingilizcede adil çözümlemesi mekanizmasi ögretilmesinin, bu ögrencilerincümlelerdeki göndergeleri dogru bir sekilde çözümlerine olumlu bir etkisi oldugugözlemlenmistir.Uygulamadan önce, gruplarin cümlelerdeki dogru göndergeleri bulmadakiaritmetik ortalamalarinin birbirine yakin oldugu gözlenmistir ( X =20,66 and X =20,92).EG CGAncak, adil çözümlemesi mekanizmasinin deney grubuna açikça ögretilmesinden sonra,deney grubunun aritmetik ortalamasinin arttigi ( X =30,26) ancak kontrol grubunun hemenEGhemen ayni kaldigi gözlenmistir ( X = 20,68). t-testi ve son testin genel analizi sonuçlari,EGdeney grubununa adil çözümlemesi mekanizmasini ögretilmesinin, o gruptaki ögrencilerinbasari düzeyini arttirdigini göstermistir.Diger bulgu ise, deney grubunun basarisinin kontrol grubunun basarisindan dahahomojen oldugudur. Uygulamadan önce ve sonra, her bir grubunun standart sapmasikarsilastirildiginda, deney gr ubundaki basarinin homojen bir biçimde olustugu (deney öncesiSS=5,33 ve deney sonrasi SS=2,18), kontrol grubu için ise homojenlik açisindan (deneyöncesi SS=5,35, deney sonrasi SS=5,06) hemen hemen önemli bir fark olmadigigözlemlenmektedir. The aim of this study is to examine the effect of explicit teaching of pronounresolution mechanism in English to Turkish learners on their assigning the correct referents insentences. Therefore, the related issues such as theoretical accounts on sentence proceedings,causality as concept, interpersonal verbs, implicit causality, verb bias, the role of theconnectives have been dealt with. This study is an experimental one for which we havecreated a research design so as to observe the effect of pronoun resolution mechanism on thetwo interdependent groups of learners (N=76) who were enrolled in English preparatoryclasses at 2005-2006 semester at Mersin University.The introduction gives information about the background information such as thepurpose of the study, the research questions, the significance and limitations of the study andthe definition of the terms.Chapter I presents the review of literature related to the issues on the pronounresolution such as causation, interpersonal verbs, implicit causality, theories on pronounresolution, pronoun resolution mechanism (verb bias, semantic roles and the use ofconnectives).Chapter II deals with the research design: method, the data collection instruments,item analysis, material development and the teaching process, participants, and statisticalanalyses of the data related to the research questions.Chapter III provides the findings and discussion related to the research questions.The conclusion highlights the crucial points of the research, gives space forsuggestions for a further study. The result of the study is that if we teach pronoun resolutionmechanism in EFL classes, then it will have a positive effect on our students in terms ofassigning the appropriate referents. Before the treatment, we found out that the arithmeticmean of the groups at assigning correct referents in the sentences was similar to each other(X =20,92). However, after the explicit teaching of pronoun resolution=20,66 and XEG CGmechanism only to the experimental group, we found out while the arithmetic mean of thecontrol group remained almost the same ( X =20,68), the arithmetic mean of theCGexperimental group increased ( X =30,26). t- test results and the overall analysis of the postEGtest show us that teaching pronoun resolution mechanism has affected the experimental grouppositively. Another finding is that the achievement of the experimental group was morehomogeneous than of the control group. When we compare the standard deviation of eachgroup before and after the treatment, we notice that the experimental group?s results werehomogenous in (before the treatment SD=5,33 after the treatment SD=2,18) and as for thecontrol group, there was almost no significant change in terms of homogeneity (before thetreatment SD=5,35, after the post test SD=5,06). Therefore, we conclude that each subject ofthe experimental group has reached a certain level of achievement, which can be counted as acue for the efficiency of the experiment.Key Words: Pronoun Resolution, Implicit Causality, Interpersonal Verbs, the Role of theConnectives, Discourse, Teaching Pronoun Resolution Mechanism
