Türkiye’nin mediolittoral bölgesinde yaşayan Laophonte cornuta türünün taksonomik revizyonu ülkemizin Akdeniz kıyılarından farklı zamanlarda toplanmış popülasyonlara ait örnekler üzerinden yapılmıştır. Daha önceki çalışmalarda L. cornuta adıyla teşhis edilmiş bireylerin diseksiyonları yapılmış ve modern ışık ve Taramalı Elektron Mikroskopları (SEM) yardımıyla yeniden tanımlanmıştır. L. cornuta olarak teşhis edilmiş bireylerin temsil ettiği populasyonlar hem populasyoniçi hem de populasyonlararası varyasyonlar göz önüne alınarak analiz edilmiş ve karşılaştırılmıştır. Elde edilen sonuçlar, çalışmanın başında öngörülen "L. cornuta adı altında Akdeniz’den kayıt edilen popülasyonlar farklı bir tür/türleri temsil etmektedir" hipotezinin doğru olduğunu net bir şekilde ortaya koymuştur. Nitekim daha önce ülkemiz sahillerinde L. cornuta olarak teşhis edilmiş popülasyonların aslında morfolojik olarak birbirine benzer ancak iki farklı türe ait olduğunu ve bu türlerden birisinin gerçek L. cornuta iken, incelenen diğer popülasyonların L. cornuta türüne ait olmadığı, aksine bilim dünyası için yeni bir türe ait olduğu (L. erdemi sp. nov.) ilk defa bu çalışma ile ortaya konulmuştur. Sonuç olarak, günümüze kadar mevcut literatürde L. cornuta için ortaya konmuş olan tür içi varyasyon sınırın doğru olmayabileceği ve Dünya'nın başka bölgelerinden bildirilmiş L. cornuta popülasyonların da farklı türleri temsil edebileceği tartışılmıştır.

ABSTRACT TAXONOIC REVISION OF LAOPHONTE CORNUTA PHILIPPI, 1840 (COPEPODA, HARPACTICOIDA, LAOPHONTIDAE) SPECIES COMPLEX INHABITING IN THE MEDITERRANEAN Taxonomic revision of Laophonte cornuta was made on the basis of the populations collected from various shores along the Mediterranean coast of Turkey. Individuals determined as L. cornuta in previous studies were initially dissected and were redefined with the aid of modern light and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Populations represented by the individuals identified as L. cornuta were analysed and compared in terms of intra- and interpopulational variations. As a conclusion of the obtained results, it was clearly demonstrated that the hypothesis assumed as "the populations recorded from the Mediterranean Sea under the name of L. cornuta represent different species" was true. Hence, previous populations determined as L. cornuta from the Turkish coasts were in fact belong to two different morphological species and it was demonstrated for the first time by this study that and one of these species is the true L. cornuta, on the other hand some of the other populations were not L. cornuta but a new species for science (L. erdemi sp.nov.). As a consequence, it was discussed that variations in the present literature for L. cornuta may not be in the range of interspecies and the populations reported from the different part of the world for L. cornuta may represent different species.
