Tarsus tarihi öneme sahip çok katmanlı bir yerleşimdir. Tarihin farklı dönemlerinde farklı nitelikleri ile değerli görülen kent, Osmanlı’nın son döneminde dokuma sanayi ile önem kazanmıştır. Bu önem, Cumhuriyetin ilanından sonra da kentin sosyo-kültürel ve ekonomik gelişiminde belirleyici bir etken olmuş ve kentin simgesi haline gelmiştir. Son yıllarda ise, Mersin ve çevresinin lojistik alan olarak gelişmesinin ve tarım üretimlerindeki değişimlerin de etkileriyle bölgede ve Tarsus’ta dokuma sanayi işlevin kaybetmiştir. Bunun sonucunda da terk edilen ve işlevsiz kalan endüstri yapıları yok olma sürecine girmiştir. Günümüzde Tarsus’ta bulunan ve endüstri mirası kavramı içinde değerlendirilmesi gereken dokuma sanayisine ait yapıların çoğunluğu koruma altına alınmamış durumdadır ve bir bölümü yıkılarak yerine yeni yapılar inşa edilmiştir.

Çalışmanın amacı, kent ve ülke tarihinde önem taşımakla birlikte henüz yerleşke ölçeğinde koruma altına alınmamış olan Çukurova Sanayi İşletmeleri’nin mevcut durumunu ve endüstri mirası olarak taşıdığı değerleri sunmaktır. Yazıda, Tarsus’ta dokuma sanayinin tarihi gelişim süreci kaynaklara dayalı olarak sosyal ve ekonomik açılımları ile açıklanmaktadır. Bu açıklamayla, kent içinde hızla yok olmakta olan dokuma sanayisine ait endüstri mirası yapıların tarihi önemi ve bu yapılar içinde Çukurova Sanayi İşletmeleri’nin yerinin ortaya çıkartılması hedeflenmektedir. Bu çerçevede, çalışmayla ilgili genel kuramsal ve yöntemsel bilgilerin yer aldığı giriş bölümünden sonra ikinci bölümde, Tarsus’ta dokuma sanayinin gelişimi sunulmaktadır. Üçüncü bölümde Çukurova Sanayi işletmelerinin tarihi gelişim süreci ve mevcut durumu aktarılmaktadır. Son bölümde Çukurova Sanayi işletmeleri koruma önerileri yer almaktadır.

Tarsus is a multi-layered settlement having historical importance. The city, which is valued with its different characteristics in different periods of history, gained importance with the textile industry in the last period of the Ottoman Empire. This importance has also been a determining factor in the sociocultural and economic development of the city after the proclamation of the Republic and textile industry became one of the symbols of the city. In recent years, textile industry has lost its function both in the region and in Tarsus. The abandoned industrial structures have been facing the threat of extinction. Today, most of the heritage buildings belonging to the textile industry in Tarsus aren't under protection and some of them have been demolished and new structures have been built instead.
The aim of the study is to present the current physical condition and heritage values of Çukurova Industrial Enterprises, which is important in the history of Tarsus and Turkey, but haven’t been taken under protection at site scale. Historical development process of the textile industry in Tarsus is explained with its social and economic meanings, in order to define the place of Çukurova Industrial Enterprises among rapidly demolishing industrial heritage buildings in Tarsus. Outcomes of the historical research depend on archival documents, şer’iyye registers and printed documents. In this context, general theoretical and methodological framework of the study is given in the introduction part. The historical development of the textile industry in Tarsus is presented in the second part. In the third part, the historical development process and current physical situation of Çukurova Industry Enterprises are explained. In the conclusion, the significance of Çukurova Industry Enterprises as an industrial heritage is explained and proposed conservation approaches are presented at site scale.
