Ex situ preservation is an important method of chicken preservation and the only method for gamete preservation is freezing of semen. In the last two decades, a lot of work has been done to improve the standard chicken semen freezing technology. Many attempts and methods have been investigated to adapt to different breeds. In this article, the structure of spermatozoa and the main factors affecting the freezing of poultry semen are first mentioned. In particular, an attempt has been made to
summarize studies on important aspects of chicken semen freezing technology, including seperma diluents, cryoprotectants, packaging types and freezing and thawing rates. Information on the underlying mechanisms of freezing damage and freezability as revealed by recent osmotic and oxidative stress and antioxidant use and recent osmotic methods on freezing efficacy is also shared.
