This study presents a corpus-driven analysis of the Turkish bodily semelfactive verb geğir- (‘to burp’), focusing on its aspectual and pragmatic behaviour. Semelfactives are generally characterized as punctual, single-stage events lacking duration and result states. Drawing on data from the Turkish Web 2012 (enTenTen) corpus, the study examines how geğir- is realized under different grammatical aspectual viewpoints, particularly perfective and imperfective constructions. The analysis explores basic-level semelfactive uses as well as aspectual shifts whereby the verb is reinterpreted as a derived-level Activity through iteration, progressive marking, or durative adverbials. In addition, the study investigates pragmatic and sociocultural patterns associated with the verb, including agentivity and gender distribution, revealing a strong bias toward male subjects. The findings contribute to the broader literature on aspectual classification by demonstrating how linguistic context and pragmatic factors interact to shape aspectual construal in Turkish, and they highlight the relevance of corpus-based methods in uncovering subtle usage patterns of semelfactive predicates.
