This study explores the recreational experiences of individuals attending football matches in stadiums and the role of leisure motivation in these experiences. Football, as a global phenomenon, is a popular sport that unites millions of people and has become a significant social occurrence. Stadiums serve as venues where this sport is experienced live, and where excitement, enthusiasm, and a sense of community reach their peak. In this context, the stadium experience is more than just watching a match; it is a multifaceted recreational activity and leisure pursuit. In this study, the concept of leisure motivation is addressed within the framework of Self-Determination Theory, Flow Theory, Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, Theory of Planned Behavior, and Uses and Gratifications Theory. Furthermore, the positive effects of recreation and sports experiences on individuals' physical, psychological, and social well-being are examined. The research adopted a qualitative research method, and semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15 spectators who attended the matches of Yeni Mersin Idman Yurdu Futbol A.Ş. on October 14, 2023, and October 22, 2023. The data obtained from the interviews were analyzed using content analysis. The findings suggest that the stadium experience is shaped by various motivations such as social interaction and belonging, excitement and enthusiasm, escape and relaxation, and team loyalty and identity. In conclusion, it is emphasized that the stadium experience is a significant recreational activity that fulfills individuals' leisure needs, strengthens social bonds, provides emotional experiences, and contributes to identity formation. The study offers suggestions for improving the stadium experience in practice and for future academic research.
