Effects of Chromium on the Hematocrit Levels and Erythrocyte Numbers of Cyprinus carpio

Cicik, Bedii | Çiftçi, Nuray | Ay, Özcan

Changes in hematocrit levels and erythrocyte numbers of Cyprinus carpio were determined after exposing the animals to 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 ppm chromium over 7, 15 and 30 days. Microhematocrit and hemocytometric methods were used for determining hematocrit levels and erythrocyte numbers respectively. No mortality was observed during the experiments. Hematocrit levels and erythrocyt numbers increased under the effect of metal on day 15. Hematocrit levels and erythtrocyte numbers decreased by increasing exposure periods except at 0.5 ppm chromium.

Metal(loid) accumulation and ecotoxicological assessment in cartilaginous fishes from the Northeastern Mediterranean

Çiftçi, Nuray | AYAS, Deniz

The present study was conducted with the objective of ascertaining the levels of selected metal(loid)s in the muscle, liver, spleen, kidney, stomach, intestinal, and gonad tissues of seven distinct cartilaginous species sampled from Northern Cyprus. This initiative was undertaken to address the dearth of metal bioaccumulation data for cartilaginous species and to elucidate the impact of metal pollution on these species, which are distinguished by their limited reproductive capacity. The samples were obtained from discarded species captured during commercial fishing activities. The metal concentrations in these tissues were subsequently determined using Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrophotometry (ICP-MS). The results indicated that the kidney tissue of Squalus blainville exhibited th...

New Record of the Velvet Belly Lanternshark Etmopterus spinax (Linnaeus, 1758) in the Deep Seas of Northern Cyprus

AYAS, Deniz | Çiftçi, Nuray

Lantern sharks are small shark species that can be seen at depths between 70 and 2000 meters. Due to their luminescent characteristics, they have been called “Lantern shark”. In total eleven specimens of the velvet belly lantern shark, Etmopterus spinax (Linnaeus, 1758), were caught in the deep seas of Northern Cyprus by using a bottom trawl. Sampling was carried out using 13 trawling operations. The collected samples were placed in 4% formalin and stored at the Museum of the Systematic, Faculty of Fisheries, Mersin University, (catalogue number: MEUFC-18-11-082). As a sampling area, the depths between 274 and 641 m were selected. Other cartilaginous fish caught during sampling except E. spinax were Galeus melastomus (1 individual), Squalus acanthias (4 individuals), Scyliorhinus ca...

Cranial Morphometrics of a Stranded Common Bottlenose Dolphin Tursiops truncatus (Montagu, 1821) in Mersin Bay (Northeastern Mediterranean, Turkey)

AYAS, Deniz | Çiftçi, Nuray

On 10 November 2017, a young male common bottlenose dolphin Tursiops truncatus (Montagu, 1821), 185 cm in total length (TL), was found dead on the Mersin Marina (36°46'065"N, 34°34'212"E) in Northeastern Mediterranean coast of Turkey. Measurements of the sample performed and documented. The specimen buried to obtain the skeleton of the individual. At the end of this process, the sample was deposited in the Museum of the Systematic, Faculty of Fisheries, Mersin University, (Catalogue no: MEUMC-17- 11-001). The morphometric measurements can contribute to ongoing fisheries biology and taxonomic studies of T. truncatus from Mediterranean Sea waters. During routine fishing activities, common bottlenose dolphins can be caught in fishing nets and drowned. This issue leads to an extra pop...

The ratio of eye diameter (ED) to standard length (SL) is 7.95. The presence of the non-indigenous Pempheris rhomboidea was reported for the first time from Northeastern Mediterranean Sea and second time fromTurkish marine waters.

Effects of cadmium on sera glucose and cortisol levels in Clarias gariepinus (Burchell, 1822).

Karaytuğ, Sahire | Karayakar, Fahri | Çiftçi, Nuray | Cicik, Bedii | Ay, Özcan

The effects of cadmium on sera glucose and cortisol levels of Clarias gariepinus was studied after exposing the animals to 0.25, 0.50 and 1.00 ppm Cd over 30 days. An autoanalyser was used in determining sera parameters. Sera glucose levels showed no significant difference between the control and 0.25 and 0.50 ppm Cd exposed fish whereas 1.00 ppm cadmium decreased sera glucose significantly (p

First Report on the Elemental Composition of the Bigeye Thresher Shark Alopias superciliosus Lowe, 1841 from the Mediterranean Sea

Çiftçi, Nuray | Cicik, Bedii | Ayas, Deniz

Cartilaginous fish species have ecological importance. Besides, the ecotoxicological studies on these species are pretty insufficient. In this study, Al, Cr, Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, As, Pb, Cd, and Sr levels were determined in muscle, liver, gill, kidney, spleen, stomach, and gonad tissues of Alopias superciliosus (Female, 240 cm TL) caught from Mersin Bay. Tissue metal analysis was determined by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS). A statistical difference was found among the tissues in terms of the metals. Fe was determined to be the highest level in all tissues (pGill>Spleen>Gonad>Kidney>Stomach>Muscle. Zn was detected at higher levels in the liver and stomach and As in other tissues after Fe. Al has the highest level after Zn and As and was mainly found in the gills. ...
