Heavy Metal Levels and Human Health Risk Assessment in Some Fish Species Caught From Kuşadası Bay (Aegean Sea): Heavy Metal Levels and Human Health Risk Assesment in Some Fish

Tecimen, Cansın Lütfi | Çiftçi, Nuray | Cicik, Bedii

Pagellus erythrinus, Mugil cephalus and Mullus barbatus), caught from Kuşadası Bay in 2016- 2017 hunting season were aimed. Metal analysis was performed using Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrophotometry (ICP-MS) in tissues prepared by the dry weight method. Metal level in tissue varied depending on the species, metal and season, Cu and Zn were highest in S. sphraena and E. encrasicolus in winter, while Pb was determined in M. cephalus in spring. The lowest and highest Cu, Zn and Pb levels in tissues were detected 0.80-5.82, 13.09-41.60 and 0.20- 1.30 μg g-1 ww, respectively. Cd level in all fish samples was found below the permissible level of ICP-MS. Tissue metal levels were determined within acceptable limits according to the Turkish Food Codex FAO/WHO standards. The intake...

Morphometric comparison of different populations of Nemipterus Randalli Russell 1986 distributed in the Mediterranean coasts of Turkey: Nemipterus randalli'nin Morfometrisi

Ay, İrfan | Çiftçi, Nuray | Ayas, Deniz

It was aimed to compare the populations of N. randalli sampled from Antalya, Anamur, Silifke, Mersin, and Iskenderun by the biometric method. BioMorph program was used in the research. Principal Components Analysis (PCA), Intercluster Correlation Analysis (ICA), and Univariate Analysis of Variance (UAV) were used in the multivariate analyzes of the individuals. The comparison of the data was made with SPSS and Excel package programs. A statistical difference was found between the populations in terms of morphometric characteristics (p

Metal Pollution Status of Surface Sediments in the Two Coastal Regions of the Mersin Bay, Northeastern Mediterranean Sea

Akçay, İsmail | Özbay, Özgür

The objective of this study is to determine metal pollution status of surface sediments in the two coastal regions of Mersin Bay under the influence of Seyhan and Göksu River inflows for the 2005-2009 period. The average metal concentrations orders were found to be Al > Cr > Cu > Zn > Cd for the Station Mersin affected by Seyhan River inflows and Al > Zn > Cr > Cu > Cd for the Station Taşucu under the influence of Göksu River. According to classification of metal pollution of surface sediments, though there was no Cd pollution, the sediments are highly polluted by heavy metals Cr, Cu and Zn in the Seyhan River influenced coastal region due to agricultural and industrial wastewater discharges.

Zonation-Related Alteration in Shell Morphology of Patella caerulea (Linnaeus, 1758) Distributed in the Mersin Coastline (Mersin Bay, NE Mediterranean Sea): Shell Morphology of Patella caerulea (Linnaeus, 1758) Distributed in the Mersin Coastline

Değirmenc, Ezgi | Çiftçi, Nuray | Ayas, Deniz

Archaeogastopoda (Thiele, 1925) order, which is distributed along the Mersin coastline. The research area consists of three regions of 4 m2 covering the supralittoral at sea level and the mediolittoral and infralittoral zones below the sea water level determined from the Mersin Viranşehir coast. A total of 80 individuals were sampled from the study area. Species identification of the samples brought to the laboratory was made by considering the morphological appearance of the radula teeth. In addition, the Shell morphology of all individuals was determined. Finally, the statistical analysis of the data was evaluated by one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the relationship between the variables by calculating the Pearson linear correlation coefficient. In the study, no individua...

Caribbean. This species has a wide geographical distribution and its distribution is known to be influenced by many anthropogenic factors. The aim of this study was to determine the mat density of H. stipulacea in Akkum coast of Mersin Bay. The quadrat method was used for sampling. Biometric measurements were made on 100 samples randomly selected from six 1 m2 stations in the sampling area. The average number of shoots was determined to be (488 shoots m-2). The average leaf length of the samples was 42.33±7.17 mm, leaf width was 5.82±0.92 mm, and the length between two nodes was 5.96±1.97 mm. Based on the field observations, it was found that the distr

Determination of Effects of Seasonal and Sampling Area on Ulva Rigida’s Elemental Composition

Alp, Mehmet Tahir | Börekçi, Nahit Soner | Ayas, Deniz

Macroalgae is used as a bioindicator for their accumulation capacity of potentially hazardous elements. Ulva spp. was used extensively in previous studies as in the recent study. Along the Mersin coast, sampling was made in four different locations (Çamlıbel Marina, Pozcu Marina, Deniz Feneri, Karaduvar) during the spring and summer seasons between 2015-2016. For elemental analyses, ICP-MS was used, and Mg, Al, K, Ti, Cr, Mn, As, Se, Sr, Mo levels were analyzed in Ulva rigidasamples. The highest level (134960.0 μg g-1) was found in the elemental analysis of Mg, and the lowest levels (20.83 μg g-1) were found in the elemental analysis of Se. Potentially hazardous trace elements (Al, Ti, Cr, Sr, As, Mn) were found in high levels in all seasons and sampling points in comparison to other studi...

Toxic Effects of Copper Nanoparticles in Aquatic Organisms

Çiftçi, Nuray | Ayas, Deniz

Although copper is an essential element for animal organisms, its potentially toxic effects have been known for centuries. In recent years, nanoparticles, which are widely used in many fields, have been added to the sources that allow copper to participate in aquatic ecosystems. The difference between nanoparticles containing Cu, Zn, Fe, Ag, Ti, and Al ions from known metal toxicity is not clear enough yet, and the toxic effects of metal oxide nanoparticles continue to be investigated. In this study, it was aimed to compile the toxic effects of copper nanoparticles in aquatic organisms living in different trophic zones of the food chain and with different organizational levels.

The Economic Importance of Macroalgae

Alp, Mehmet Tahir | Ayas, Deniz

In this study, we discussed algae with economic importance. Information was given about the use of macroalgae in the food industry, medicine and pharmacy, additives, organic agriculture, wastewater treatment, and bioplastic production, which are the areas of use in the economy. The taxa and species used in these areas were investigated. Macroalgae in the seas of our country were examined, and information was given about how they can contribute to the economy
