Stratification strength and light climate explain variation in chlorophyll a at the continental scale in a European multilake survey in a heatwave summer

Alp, Mehmet Tahir

To determine the drivers of phytoplankton biomass, we collected standardized morphometric, physical, and biological data in 230 lakes across the Mediterranean, Continental, and Boreal climatic zones of the European continent. Multilinear regression models tested on this snapshot of mostly eutrophic lakes (median total phosphorus [TP] = 0.06 and total nitrogen [TN] = 0.7 mg L−1), and its subsets (2 depth types and 3 climatic zones), show that light climate and stratification strength were the most significant explanatory variables for chlorophyll a (Chl a) variance. TN was a significant predictor for phytoplankton biomass for shallow and continental lakes, while TP never appeared as an explanatory variable, suggesting that under high TP, light, which partially controls stratification streng...

Significance of catechol-O-methyltransferase gene polymorphism in fibromyalgia syndrome.

Erdal, Mehmet Emin | Erdal, Nurten

Fibromyalgia syndrome (FS) is associated with a neuroendocrinal disorder characterized by abnormal function of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, including hyperactive adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) release and adrenal hyporesponsiveness. Catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) enzyme inactivates catecholamines and catecholamine-containing drugs. Polymorphism in the gene encodes for the COMT enzyme. For this study, the significance of COMT polymorphism was assessed in FS. There were three polymorphisms of the COMT gene: LL, LH, and HH. The analysis of COMT polymorphism was performed using polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Sixty-one patients with FS and 61 healthy volunteers were included in the study. Although no significant difference was found between LL and LH separately, the...

Demirbağ, Burcu | Ballı, Ebru | Orekici Temel, Gülhan | Yılmaz, Mustafa Kemal | Değirmenci, Evren | Kibar, Deniz

Chemotherapy plays a role in many cancer therapies, including breast cancer, but due to its significant side effects, alternate treatment approaches have been investigated. One such alternative is photodynamic therapy (PDT), which employs a combination of oxygen, a photosensitizer (PS), and light of a specific wavelength. Transition metal complexes and SBL have gained interest in PDT. In this study aimed to assess the potential antitumor activity and underlying mechanism of a newly synthesized Schiff base ligand (SBL)-mediated PDT on MCF-7 cells, comparing its efficacy to cisplatin. We synthesized and characterized two novel Pd-conjugated SBL compounds (complex-1 and 2). Following the treatment of MCF-7 cells with these compounds, a light-emitting diode (LED) was utilized to deliver a ligh...

Association of NRG3 and ERBB4 gene polymorphism with nicotine dependence in Turkish population

Erdal, Mehmet Emin

Background Nicotine dependence (ND) is characterized by regular smoking, anxiety, irritation, difficulty concentrating, impatience, restlessness, tremor, dizziness, hunger, nicotine demand, and the individual’s reluctance to quit despite knowing the health risks of smoking. Recently, it has been reported that the Neuregulin 3 (NRG3)/Erb-B2 receptor tyrosine kinase 4 (ERBB4) signaling pathway plays a role in ND. NRG3, which is activated after nicotine intake, binds to ERBB4 and causes GABA release. GABA reduces anxiety and tension, which are one of the nicotine withdrawal symptoms. Therefore we aimed to investigate the relationship between NRG3 and ERBB4 gene polymorphisms and ND. Materials and methods The study population was comprised of patients with ND (n = 200) and healthy non-smoker c...

Efficient removal of insecticide “imidacloprid” from water by electrochemical advanced oxidation processes

Turabik, Meral | Gözmen, Belgin

The oxidative degradation of imidacloprid (ICP) has been carried out by electrochemical advanced oxidation processes (EAOPs), anodic oxidation, and electro-Fenton, in which hydroxyl radicals are generated electrocatalytically. Carbon-felt cathode and platinum or boron-doped diamond (BDD) anodes were used in electrolysis cell. To determine optimum operating conditions, the effects of applied current and catalyst concentration were investigated. The decay of ICP during the oxidative degradation was well fitted to pseudo-first-order reaction kinetics and absolute rate constant of the oxidation of ICP by hydroxyl radicals was found to be kabs(ICP)=1.23×109 L mol−1 s −1 . The results showed that both anodic oxidation and electro-Fenton process with BDD anode exhibited high minera...

A novel additive for enhancing biomass energy production from agro-industrial wastes: synthesis of hydrophobic nanoporous silica aerogel and its effect on methane production

Akbay, Habibe Elif Gülşen | Başgöz, Öyküm

Anaerobic digestion (AD) is one of the most preferred processes for the treatment of organic waste. However, additional processes such as co-digestion, pretreatment, and additive addition continue to be explored to remove the limits on the applicability of AD. This study investigated the effects of hydrophobic nanoporous silica aerogel (NpSA) synthesized from waste rice husks on the anaerobic co-digestion (AnCD) of the mixture consisting of sewage sludge and fruit processing industry wastes. All bioreactors containing NpSA-free, 0.1 g, 0.2 g, 0.5 g, and 1 g NpSA (0.03–0.3 gNpSA/gVSadded) were operated in a mesophilic-batch process. Biogas and methane yields increased from 346 mL/gVS (NpSA-free) to 387 mL/gVS and from 231 mL/gVS (NpSA-free) to 288 mL/gVS, respectively, with 0.1 g NpSA addit...

Identifying competency demands in calculus textbook examples: The case of integrals

Özgeldi, Meriç

This study investigates how three widely used calculus textbooks realise integrals as a potential to prompt mathematical competencies, adapting the rating scheme used in Boesen et al. (The Journal of Mathematical Behavior, 33:72–87, 2014), Pettersen and Braeken (International Journal of Science and Mathematics Education, 17(2):405–425, 2019) and Turner, Blum and Niss (2015). For this purpose, the study analysed examples (n = 444) about integrals—specifically, to assess the extent to which solving those examples calls for the activation of a particular set of mathematical competencies:Communication; Devising Strategies; Mathematising; Representation; Using Symbols,Operations and Formal Language [Symbols and Formalism]; Reasoning and Argument. The competency demand of the examples was ...
