First Report on the Elemental Composition of the Bigeye Thresher Shark Alopias superciliosus Lowe, 1841 from the Mediterranean Sea

Çiftçi, Nuray | Cicik, Bedii | Ayas, Deniz

Cartilaginous fish species have ecological importance. Besides, the ecotoxicological studies on these species are pretty insufficient. In this study, Al, Cr, Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, As, Pb, Cd, and Sr levels were determined in muscle, liver, gill, kidney, spleen, stomach, and gonad tissues of Alopias superciliosus (Female, 240 cm TL) caught from Mersin Bay. Tissue metal analysis was determined by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS). A statistical difference was found among the tissues in terms of the metals. Fe was determined to be the highest level in all tissues (pGill>Spleen>Gonad>Kidney>Stomach>Muscle. Zn was detected at higher levels in the liver and stomach and As in other tissues after Fe. Al has the highest level after Zn and As and was mainly found in the gills. ...

First record of the big nose shark, Carcharhinus altimus (Springer, 1950) from Mersin Bay

Ayas, Deniz | Çiftçi, Nuray | Yalçın, Esin

The total length of this shark specimen, which caught from a depth of 25 m, is 65.2 cm, and its weight is 2.2 kg. In this study, juvenile C. altimus species are more likely to be born in the Levant basin than the immigration. Their parents are highly likely to be found in the deep waters of the northeastern Mediterranean. This finding may indicate that this circumglobal species may also spread in the Northeast Mediterranean. Thus, continuous studies are needed in this region for further investigation and monitoring of these species. This research will make a significant contribution to many researchers working in this field in the future.

Ayas, Deniz | Çiftçi, Nuray | Tanış, Yekta

The study aimed to report a confirmed stranding record of an adult female Risso’s dolphin (Grampus griseus) from the northeastern Mediterranean Sea. This species is classified as "Least Concern" in the Mediterranean by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The individual, which was first seen alive from the Erdemli shores of Mersin Bay on 10 April 2023, was tried to push back into the water after being stranded ashore. After the individual died, the corpse was brought to Mersin University Marine Life Museum for external examination. It was determined that the individual weighed 360 kg and had a length of 330 cm. Many old and new scars were found on the individual's skin. It was understood that the newly formed deep cut marks on the head area were caused by the ...

Ay, İrfan | Çiftçi, Nuray | Ayas, Deniz

It was aimed to compare the populations of N. randalli sampled from Antalya, Anamur, Silifke, Mersin, and Iskenderun by the biometric method. BioMorph program was used in the research. Principal Components Analysis (PCA), Intercluster Correlation Analysis (ICA), and Univariate Analysis of Variance (UAV) were used in the multivariate analyzes of the individuals. The comparison of the data was made with SPSS and Excel package programs. A statistical difference was found between the populations in terms of morphometric characteristics (p

Potential Usage of Pufferfish Dentin as a Metal Accumulation Indicator

Çiftçi, Nuray | Ayas, Deniz

The pufferfish are non-indigenous species in the Mediterranean Sea that do not have predators in the food chain. Therefore, the determination of heavy metal accumulation in pufferfish species can be considered as natural chelation for the aquatic environment. The present study, the potential usage of dentin tissue as an indicator of heavy metal bioaccumulation was examined in pufferfish species. The accumulation of Co, Cu, Zn, Fe, Mo, Ni, Se, Al, Cd, Pb, As, Cr in dentin, liver, kidney and muscle tissues of four pufferfish species (Lagocephalus sceleratus, Lagocephalus spadiceus, Lagocephalus suezensis, and Torquigener flavimaculosus) were captured in the Göksu River and Yeşjlovacık coasts of Turkey by a commercial trawler. The different bioaccumulation levels were found in each species...

First record of Pempheris rhomboidea (Kossmann & Räuber, 1877) harvested from aquaculture fish cages

Çiftçi, Nuray | Ayas, Deniz

An individual of Pempheris rhomboidea species was detected in a cage where sea bream was grown in the Mersin Dana Island region. P. rhomboidea is a species of the Pempheridae family distributed in the Indo-Pacific and West Atlantic and is a nocturnal species that inhabit coral reefs and rocky waters. It is known that different wild fish species enter into the aquaculture fish cages where marine fish are grown and grow together with the aquaculture species. There is no previous record of this species obtained from aquaculture cages. The total length and weight of the individual in the cage were 12.6 cm and 23.938 g. Considering the mesh size of the cage, it is estimated that this individual entered the cage in the juvenile period. At the end of the 11-month aquaculture period, it wa...
