Stratification strength and light climate explain variation in chlorophyll a at the continental scale in a European multilake survey in a heatwave summer

Alp, Mehmet Tahir

To determine the drivers of phytoplankton biomass, we collected standardized morphometric, physical, and biological data in 230 lakes across the Mediterranean, Continental, and Boreal climatic zones of the European continent. Multilinear regression models tested on this snapshot of mostly eutrophic lakes (median total phosphorus [TP] = 0.06 and total nitrogen [TN] = 0.7 mg L−1), and its subsets (2 depth types and 3 climatic zones), show that light climate and stratification strength were the most significant explanatory variables for chlorophyll a (Chl a) variance. TN was a significant predictor for phytoplankton biomass for shallow and continental lakes, while TP never appeared as an explanatory variable, suggesting that under high TP, light, which partially controls stratification streng...

The Struggle for Syria: Strategic Rivalry and the Risks of Escalation

Sarı, Buğra | Kırışık, Avnihan

This article investigates the rivalry between Turkey and Israel over Syria, which has intensified since the ouster of Bashar al-Assad in December 2024. The two states have pursued conflicting security objectives, becoming principal actors in Syria's shifting political landscape. Ankara seeks to combat groups affiliated with the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party, build up a friendly regime in Damascus, and establish a lasting military presence. By contrast, Israel aims to secure its northern border by creating a buffer zone against the new Islamist government and targeting Iran-linked infrastructure. These conflicting strategies have raised the risk of proxy violence or even direct confrontation, especially in key areas like Quneitra, near the Golan Heights, and Druze-inhabited areas i...

Measurement-Based Evaluation of Photogrammetric Accuracy in Small Object Models Using Turntable and Manual Acquisition

Ulvi, Ali | Yiğit, Abdurahman Yasin

Accurate and efficient 3D reconstruction of small-scale objects remains challenging due to intricate geometries, limited imaging volumes, and sensitivity to acquisition conditions. This study presents a quantitative comparison between two close-range photogrammetric acquisition methods: a conventional manual tripod setup and a custom-built, automated turntable platform controlled by an Arduino microcontroller. Four geometrically distinct objects were reconstructed using both approaches and analyzed through a unified Structure-from-Motion (SfM) workflow. Dimensional accuracy was assessed using reference measurements obtained with a digital vernier caliper (±0.01 mm precision), while geometric fidelity was evaluated through Cloud-to-Cloud (C2C) surface deviation analysis. Results consistentl...

Optimization of solvent extraction process of some Turkish coals using response surface methodology and production of ash-free coal

Gözmen, Belgin | Sönmez, Özgür

In order to produce ash-free coal (AFC) from three Turkish coals, solvent extraction of coals using 1-methylnaphthalene (1-MN) at different temperatures were conducted. The extraction yield of coals was found dependenton coal, temperature, and solvent type. When there was usage of 1-MN as solvent, the extraction yield was low. However,on addition of N-methyl-2-pyryrolidone (NMP) or quinoline (QN) into 1-MN, the extraction yield increased. Following theextractions, we obtained AFC with less than 0.65% ash content for the three coals used in this study. The response surfacemethodology (RSM) was employed to investigate the solvent extraction conditions. The factors investigated were extractiontemperature and additional polar solvent ratio. The obtained results demonstrated that either excess ...

Transcutaneous Vagus Nerve Stimulation Enhances Probabilistic Learning

Büyükgüdük, İlkim | Geraldine Veldhuizen, Maria

tVNS enhances various memory and learning mechanisms, but there is inconclusive evidence on whether probabilistic learning can be enhanced by tVNS. Here, we tested a simplified version of the probabilistic learning task with monetary rewards in a between-participants design with left and right-sided cymba conchae and tragus stimulation (compared to sham stimulation) in a sample of healthy individuals (n = 80, 64 women, on average 26.38 years old). tVNS enhances overall accuracy significantly(p = 4.09 x 10⁻⁰⁴) and reduces response times (p = 1.1006 x 10⁻⁴⁹) in the probabilistic learning phase. Reinforcement learningmodelling of the data revealed that the tVNS group uses a riskier strategy, dedicates more time to stimulus encoding and motorprocesses and exhibits greater reward sensitivity re...
