Stratification strength and light climate explain variation in chlorophyll a at the continental scale in a European multilake survey in a heatwave summer

Alp, Mehmet Tahir

To determine the drivers of phytoplankton biomass, we collected standardized morphometric, physical, and biological data in 230 lakes across the Mediterranean, Continental, and Boreal climatic zones of the European continent. Multilinear regression models tested on this snapshot of mostly eutrophic lakes (median total phosphorus [TP] = 0.06 and total nitrogen [TN] = 0.7 mg L−1), and its subsets (2 depth types and 3 climatic zones), show that light climate and stratification strength were the most significant explanatory variables for chlorophyll a (Chl a) variance. TN was a significant predictor for phytoplankton biomass for shallow and continental lakes, while TP never appeared as an explanatory variable, suggesting that under high TP, light, which partially controls stratification streng...

A study of mucilage in light microscope photographs acquired by using a different painting material of Gomphonema sp.

Alp, Mehmet Tahir | Özbay, Özgür

This research was based on the patterns of Gomphonema sp. obtained from Lake Hazar (Elaziğ, Turkey), which has a high alkali feature. It was carried out by monitoring the live samples of patterns isolated from the littoral part of the lake, which was painted by a different material. It is known, to date, that India ink has been widely used in the painting of live algal sample. In this research, hematoxylen solution, which was commonly used in obtaining images from histologic isolated sample by using light microscope, was used instead of India ink. Incredibly, findings have been spotted in this research, which was carried out for the purpose of photographing the mucilage morphology of Gomphonema sp. in a clearer and more significant sense. Thus, this study was photographed under light micro...

Alp, Mehmet Tahir | Börekçi, Nahit Soner | Ayas, Deniz

Macroalgae is used as a bioindicator for their accumulation capacity of potentially hazardous elements. Ulva spp. was used extensively in previous studies as in the recent study. Along the Mersin coast, sampling was made in four different locations (Çamlıbel Marina, Pozcu Marina, Deniz Feneri, Karaduvar) during the spring and summer seasons between 2015-2016. For elemental analyses, ICP-MS was used, and Mg, Al, K, Ti, Cr, Mn, As, Se, Sr, Mo levels were analyzed in Ulva rigidasamples. The highest level (134960.0 μg g-1) was found in the elemental analysis of Mg, and the lowest levels (20.83 μg g-1) were found in the elemental analysis of Se. Potentially hazardous trace elements (Al, Ti, Cr, Sr, As, Mn) were found in high levels in all seasons and sampling points in comparison to other studi...

Assessment of eutrophication in the Berdan River Basin (Türkiye) using various classification tools

Özbay, Özgür | Akçay, İsmail | Alp, Mehmet Tahir

The trophic status of the Berdan River Basin was determined using univariate and multivariate classification tools. The results indicated that the water quality/ trophic status of a downstream section of the Berdan River was characterized as “poor/eutrophic” due to anthropogenic inputs from agricultural, industrial and domestic wastewater discharges. Strong and positive correlations between TRIX values and concentrations of eutrophication parameters suggest that nutrient enrichment of water in the Berdan River during its flow will result in further eutrophication in the coastal region of the NE Mediterranean Sea. Therefore, the trophic and pollution status of the Berdan River, as well as other regional rivers flowing into the coastal area of the NE Mediterranean Sea should be monitored to ...

A study on water quality and trophic state of Akgöl Lagoon (Mersin, Turkey).

Alp, Mehmet Tahir | Fakıoğlu, Yunus Emre | Özbay, Özgür

This study aimed to determine the physicochemical characteristics of the water quality and trophic state of Akgol Lagoon located in the eastern Mediterranean. Cluster analysis clearly revealed the € spatial heterogeneity classifying sampling stations as saline and freshwater/brackish water sites. A multivariate analysis of variance followed by principal component analysis supported that salinity was major factor affecting physicochemical water quality variations in the lagoon. As salinity was mainly governed by freshwater inflows depending on agricultural irrigation, it can be proposed that water quality was significantly influenced from freshwater use by human activities. The parameters used as predictors (total nitrogen, total phosphorus, chlorophyll a and Secchi disk transparency) yield...

Nutrient inputs from two major rivers into the cilician basin of the north-eastern Mediterranean Sea.

Türkeri, Mehmet | Marankoz, Suat | Özbay, Özgür | Akçay, İsmail | Alp, Mehmet Tahir

In this study, dissolved nutrients concentrations were measured monthly at downstream points of the two regional rivers (the Berdan and Göksu rivers) flowing into the Cilician Basin of the North-eastern (NE) Mediterranean Sea.The dissolved nutrients data obtained between September 2021 and August 2022 were used to determine riverine nutrient fluxes. This study showed that spatial and temporal variations were recorded in nutrients concentrations of the two regional rivers with the maximum values consistently recorded in the Berdan River having lower volume fluxes. The annual nutrient inputs of the two regional rivers indicated that higher amounts of dissolved nutrients were carried by the Göksu River due to its higher volume fluxrate. The calculated molar ratios from total nitrogen (TN)and p...

Eutrophication Status of the Berdan and Göksu River Basins in Turkey

Akçay, İsmail | Özbay, Özgür | Alp, Mehmet Tahir

In this study, the eutrophication status of the Berdan and Göksu River Basins was determined by using recently obtained data between September 2021 and August 2022. Very high total phosphorus and trophic index (TRIX) values indicated that all stations visited in the Berdan, and Göksu River Basins were characterized as eutrophic (bad). The correlations between TRIX and eutrophication-related parameters showed strong and positive relations between TRIX and concentrations of Chlorophyll-a and total phosphorus strongly suggesting that the increase in total phosphorus concentrations highly enhanced primary productivity and eutrophication. The P-enrichment in the Berdan and Göksu River Basins caused eutrophication in these river waters, leading to the further development of coastal eutrophicatio...
